Bendix versus Bijur

Bendix versus Bijur

The starter motor drive on nearly all pre-war small horsepower cars manufactured by Rolls-Royce is called a Bijur drive. The exception is a small number of early 20hp chassis that were equipped with a Bendix drive.

The name Bendix has been adopted by the majority of people as the generic name for all starter motor drives which engage with the flywheel by the driving gear sliding up a helix until it engages with the flywheel. Technically it is incorrect to describe the Bijur drive fitted to a Rolls-Royce or Bentley as a Bendix. However at the risk of perpetuating a myth we have chosen for the time being to describe the component parts of the Bijur drive as Bendix parts.
