Technical Seminar: The Overhaul Of Small Horsepower Rolls-Royce Engines

#33 of 37

We held a technical seminar at the end of February, led by Will Fiennes, about the overhaul of small horsepower Rolls-Royce engines.

We had a good turn out and attendees enjoyed a day of discussion, practical demonstrations and handy tips, along with lunch and plenty of cups of tea and coffee!

At the outset the group was advised that the intention of the Seminar was not to enable them to undertake a complete engine overhaul themselves, as this requires specialist skills and equipment which it is unlikely they possess, but rather to inform them what processes and procedures are required. With this knowledge they would be in a better position to talk to a specialist engine builder about possible work that might be required and to make a judgement about the abilities of the specialist.

Additional topics covered included the range of clutches fitted to pre-war engines, from the early 20hp clutch to the Borg and Beck, and their strengths and weaknesses.

In conclusion, a Schedule detailing what might be involved in undertaking a full engine rebuild was handed round to help the delegates understand what the full rebuild should involve. With this to hand they should now be better placed to discuss with one or more rebuilders what was being offered when in need of an engine overhaul.
